The furor over Lionel Messi forced an Inter Miami rival to make a striking decision: “He generated unprecedented interest”

After his vacation in Rosario, Lionel Messi has already returned to the United States and will begin the preseason with Inter Miami. It will be his first full calendar year in North American soccer and the goal will be to win the first Major League Soccer (MLS) title for the Florida franchise. Once again, the stadiums in that country will be packed to the rafters and ticket sales are expected to be furious with the expectation that everyone will see live and direct a match of the best soccer player on the planet. And one of the rivals of La Pulga’s team has already taken note of this and decided to move to receive the Argentine crack.

On Saturday, April 13, Sporting Kansas City will be at home against Inter Miami for the eighth date of the MLS regular season. The team that will be Messi and company’s rival plays at its Sporting Park stadium, which has a capacity for 18,000 spectators. But due to the boom already generated by the presence of Leo, they decided to move the match to the GEHA Field of the Kansas City Chiefs football team, where Travis Michael Kelce, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, plays.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has a full capacity of 79,000, 61,000 more than Sporting Park. The excitement generated by Messi’s presence is already being felt and full capacity is expected. Tickets will be sold from January 16 at noon (local time) and the cheapest tickets will cost US$65. Tickets will be sold through Ticketmaster. There will be a presale at 10 a.m. for Kansas City FC season ticket holders.

“This match has generated unprecedented interest since Major League Soccer released our schedule less than three weeks ago,” said Sporting Kansas City President and CEO Jake Reid. “We believe this will be the biggest event in Kansas City this spring,” Reid added.

“The opportunity to host this match, which will be Lionel Messi’s first MLS match in the Midwest, is especially exciting as our region prepares to host Copa America matches this summer and FIFA World Cup matches in 2026″, the leader stressed.

GEHA Field features natural grass and is one of 11 U.S. stadiums selected for the 2026 World Cup. It will also host this year’s Copa America and will host the match between the home team and Uruguay on July 1.

Last year, Inter Miami couldn’t fight for the MLS title and Messi could do little because when he arrived in the final stretch of the regular season, his team was in last place. Although they managed to get some victories under the Argentinean’s guidance, they did not manage to reach at least the playoffs.

However, under Leo’s guidance, Inter Miami achieved its first star in the Leagues Cup, the tournament that brought together teams from MLS and Liga MX. With a full preseason and with luxury reinforcements such as the arrival of Luis Suarez (to be presented this Saturday), who joins Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, among others, the Florida franchise will do everything to achieve its first MLS crown.

MLS will kick off on Wednesday, February 21 with Inter Miami’s home game against Real Salt Lake. But before that, Messi’s team will play a series of friendlies. It will begin its 2024 journey with a match in El Salvador on January 19, then travel to Saudi Arabia for matches on January 29 against Neymar’s Al-Hilal (he is injured) and on February 1 against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr before playing in Hong Kong on February 4 against a selection of local stars. Then, on February 7, they will face Vissel Kobe at the National Stadium in Tokyo. In addition, on February 15, they will host Newell’s, which will be very special for Leo as he is a fan of the Rosario-based team.
